THE BOYFRIEND
This charming, colourful show has absolutely no aim other than to give pleasure.  And it does that wholeheartedly.  What's more, it is peopled by awfully nice characters and crammed with catchy tunes.

Juliette Albone sings sweetly as Polly and Craig Downton is a thoroughly decent chap as Tony.  Katharine Jacobs made an exceptionally fine Maisie, vibrant and fun-loving and Sam Holmes pursued her amorously as American playboy Bobby.  Their Charleston duet was a highlight of the show.   As Tony's father, Jim Black is a bit of a rascal, constantly being brought to heel by his long suffering lady, played by Jeannie Oliver.  Carol Anne Taylor, Elaine Flukes, Geoff Coventry, Sarah George, Chloe Pyner, Eleanor Ward, Luke Jones, Alex Dunstan and Dave Arnold completed the cast.

Barry Sanigar directs crisply with the lightest of touches, Wendy Holmes creates the toe-tapping choreography while Shirley Thynne, Bill Moyle and their musicians provide the accompaniments, jolly and tinkly, or romantic and haunting by turn.
This is tuneful nostalgia, set in a carefree world of constantly blue skies and happy endings.  Nonsense but nice.
